Russia aims to redraw boundaries in the Baltic Sea region.
Russia is looking to alter its maritime boundaries in the Baltic Sea, as per a proposal presented by the Moscow Ministry of Defense. This change would affect the areas near Russian islands in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland and around the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. The ministry stated that old Soviet era maps were incorrect and don't match the present-day cartographic coordinates.
Finland has shown some worry in response. According to President Alexander Stubb, the Finnish government is delving into the news circulating in the Russian media. "We're keeping a close eye on this situation," Stubb mentioned, further stating: "So far, Russia has not reached out to us regarding this matter." The Russian decision comes after Finland's decision to become a NATO member due to Moscow's attack on Ukraine. Finland's border with Russia measures approximately 1,300 kilometers. Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen urged Russia to adhere to the United Nations conventions and global maritime regulations.
