- Rob Lowe: Sober after a family emergency.
American actor Rob Lowe says he finally overcame his alcohol addiction over 30 years ago after he had neglected his family. "It's like it happened yesterday," the 60-year-old ("Parks and Recreation") told U.S. magazine "People".
After his grandfather had a heart attack, his mother left a voicemail begging for a conversation. "I couldn't handle it in the state I was in and had to go to sleep," Lowe recalled. He also immediately reached for a bottle of tequila. "That was the final wake-up call. I've been sober since."
According to "People", Lowe went to rehab in 1990. But it was a gradual process over the years, he said.
A "first inkling of a conscience" for him was the comedy "Shampoo" with Warren Beatty. "It's a great film, but in the end, he's a womanizer, a charming playboy who has nothing." Also, when videos surfaced in the late '80s showing Lowe having sex with two young women, he reassessed his life, he said. "But what really changed me was that I wasn't able to be there for my family and myself."
Rob Lowe's performance in the comedy "Shampoo" with Warren Beatty sparked a sense of conscience within him. Despite this realization, it wasn't until embarrassing incidents and his inability to be present for his family that he fully committed to his sobriety.
Inspired by his own experiences, Rob Lowe has since become an advocate for addiction recovery, drawing from his personal journey as an American actor known for his role in "Parks and Recreation."
