RFK Jr. retracts stance against government restrictions on abortion.

In an online post on Friday night, independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. backtracked on his previous stance against government-imposed restrictions on abortion access, following backlash from pro-life activists, including those within his own campaign.

Independent Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. proposes a 'No Spoiler' pledge with President Joe Biden for the upcoming elections at a campaign event in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, NY, on May 1, 2024. Mr. Kennedy suggested that in a 50 state head-to-head poll of more than 300,000 potential voters, whoever surveyed as weakest would agree to drop out of the 2024 Presidential race.

Kennedy expressed his view on the controversial topic of abortion, stating that he thinks it should be allowed up to a certain point during pregnancy. He went on to clarify that he supports restrictions in the later stages of pregnancy, resembling the restrictions set by the Roe v. Wade case.

The abortion debate in America is known for being highly controversial, but Kennedy noticed a growing agreement on this matter. He believes the right moment to restrict abortion is when the baby can survive independently outside the womb. So, he advocates for unrestricted abortion until the fetus can survive on its own.

Kennedy revealed his stance on this issue after addressing the topic during an interview with Sage Steele, a podcast host, where he strongly opposed any government limitations on abortion access, even suggesting it should be allowed up until delivery. This stance sparked backlash from anti-abortion groups, specifically Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, who called him "unacceptable to millions of pro-life voters."

On Friday, Kennedy's adviser Angela Stanton King, who also works on outreach to African-American voters and abortion policies, publicly criticized his initial stance. Eventually, Kennedy agreed to revise his position and provide a clearer explanation. This is the second time Kennedy's stand on government limitations for abortion access has changed following a public statement. Last year, during an interview with a journalist, he voiced his support for a three-month abortion restriction, which his campaign later distanced from.

In summary, Kennedy initially opposed any government limits on abortion access, even suggesting it should be allowed up until delivery. This view created negative reactions from several anti-abortion organizations, prompting Kennedy to modify his stance and maintain that abortion should be unrestricted until the baby is viable outside the womb. He also acknowledged that restrictions could be applied in the final months of pregnancy.
