Renault Symbioz E-Tech Combination Hybrid Model Boasts a Mixed Powertrain, offering 145 horsepower

With the Symbioz, Renault gives a tempting offer for those who've been hesitant about electric powertrains. Essentially, it's a Scenic with a mix of power sources. It even drives a bit electrically in hybrid mode.

Many new car buyers still find driving purely electric a thrill. However, those without a home charging setup often steer clear. But worry not, there are fast-charging stations in even the most secluded areas of Germany. Internal combustion engines will stick around for some time yet. At Renault, they're often hybridized, and that's why this new compact SUV, the Symbioz, comes equipped with multiple power options.

Under its hood, things might seem a tad complicated. A 1.6-liter, naturally aspirated engine supplies 69 kW/94 PS. It's teamed up with a 36 kW/49 PS electric motor. Renault claims a combined output of 105 kW/143 PS, offering decent performance without being over the top. There's also a second electric motor that boosts the gasoline engine's crank and acts as a starter.

The recently unveiled Renault Symbioz showcases a streamlined and contemporary look, avoiding an over-the-top design.

This basic setup draws power from a 1.3 kWh battery, either through regenerative braking or the internal combustion engine. The complex transmission includes four different ratios for the gasoline engine and two for the electric motor, making this 1.5-tonne car pretty efficient, with a WLTP fuel consumption of just 4.8 liters per 100 kilometers.

Elegant Launch

The Symbioz in its present Renault design bears a striking resemblance to an elongated Captur.

The Symbioz launches smoothly due to the absense of a friction clutch, permitting an electric launch. It offers several modes to adjust the operating strategy. For instance, a special mode ensures the battery stays fully charged to help tackle inclines. And with an extra 205 Nm of torque, it certainly doesn't disappoint. You can even climb hills with an empty battery.

You never feel underpowered in the Symbioz. Its intricate transmission allows for a wide range of gear ratios, contributing to its steady performance. While there are noticeable shift processes, the Symbioz powertrain delivers smooth acceleration, devoid of any pronounced torque interruptions.

The large touchscreen is utilizing Google as its primary system operating software.

Much More to Explore

However, the Symbioz does come with its share of vibrations and warning sounds for lane departures and speeding. Fortunately, you can turn these off without venturing into the menus. There are indeed many menus – located on a sleek 10.4-inch touchscreen, seamlessly integrated into the vehicle’s design. Since Google serves as the base OS, the controls are straightforward. Voice control is highly recommended, boasting a surprisingly low error rate.

Ample space for around 1600 liters of baggage exists in the rear of a Renault Symbioz, with the rear seats being folded flat.

So, how comfy is this 4.41-meter-long compact SUV? The French brands are renowned for comfort, and if you interpret comfort as ease of movement, then the term applies. The Symbioz is not especially agile or precise in handling or steering, yet it manages asphalt imperfections with a balance of smoothness and roughness. Given the quite comfortable seats, the overall impression is harmonious. The price tag, starting at 32,550 euros, should also be considered.

Beyond a reasonable level of equipment, it offers a lot of practicality. This includes a dual-level cargo floor, a sliding rear seat, and the ability to accommodate nearly 1,600 liters of luggage with the rear seats folded down. It's also packed with advanced driver assistance systems and practical features. The SUV also boasts a touch of high-tech: Depending on the equipment, the large, electrochromic panoramic roof can be darkened electronically.

The electromagnetically adjustable glass ceiling in the Renault Symbioz can darken to opaqueness.

In the near future, Renault will unveil a mild hybrid version of the Symbioz, so an electric motor will likely join the party.
