In the heart of Vienna, an unprecedented summer rainstorm submerged streets and train tracks. A woman found herself submerged and trapped beneath a bus, as emergency services reported.
Beyond Vienna's city limits, an astounding 110 liters of rain per square meter were recorded - the highest ever for a summer month, going back 152 years of measurements, as reported by ORF. Alongside the heavy rainfall, hail also pelted the Austrian capital.
Critical Condition for a Lady
Slippery conditions around a bus stop on a steep street caught a passerby off-guard. According to Vienna's Fire Department, she was swept away by thetorrential floodwaters and became trapped under a parked bus. Firefighters managed to lift the vehicle, freeing the woman. A fire department spokesperson confirmed her critical condition to the German Press Agency, who then transported her to a local hospital.
The Vienna Fire Department was put to the test with multiple emergencies due to flooded streets and water-damaged buildings. Train services on a city line were also disrupted as a result of the heavy rain. The storm, however, did not engulf the entire city area.
Despite the woman's rescue, her condition remained critical, necessitating immediate medical attention. In such emergency situations, swift action and effective coordination are paramount.
