Following a controversy regarding racism, - Rebels arrange protests on Sylt during the weekend.
A group of punks is prepared to organize demonstrations on the North Sea island of Sylt this weekend in response to a recent racism incident. The demonstrations are being organized by Aktion Sylt and are being encouraged through Instagram.
The events include a march through Westerland on Saturday afternoon, followed by a vigil with music in Kampen village, where racial abuse occurred during Easter celebrations. On Sunday, a run is scheduled. The organizers have invited "anyone who wants to stand up against the right-wing shift in society" to participate.
According to Jonas Hötger, participants are encouraged to bring items such as "music box, posters, banners, placards, banner wagons, music" for the protests. Hötger added that another demonstration by "Sylt against the right" is also planned for Sunday, and that the punks want to "bring our own speeches and visit other places." Therefore, two separate demonstrations are being registered.
The move comes after a video of a party in a Sylt bar went viral, with guests shouting racist slogans such as "Foreigners out" and "Germany for the Germans." The video sparked nationwide outrage, with politicians expressing their horror. The Public Prosecutor's Office in Flensburg is now investigating a woman and two men for incitement to hatred and suspicion of using symbols of a constitutionally unlawful organization, respectively. There have been increasing reports of similar incidents.
Previously, punks have protested on Sylt over the past two years, focusing their criticism on capitalism. They have faced criticism for their loud music, garbage, and unpleasant smells. The punks also plan to set up their tents on Sylt again from July 22nd for several weeks.
