The federal, state and local governments once again spent more money on schools, universities and daycare centers last year. Public spending on education rose by 5.3 percent year-on-year to 176.3 billion euros in 2022, as announced by the Federal Statistical Office on Thursday in the annual education finance report based on preliminary data from public budgets. As a result, public spending on education accounted for 4.6 percent of gross domestic product last year.

At 87.5 billion euros, around half of public spending on education went to schools. Just under a quarter, at 40.5 billion euros, was spent on child daycare, and a good fifth, at 35.4 billion euros, went to universities. Converted to the total population, public budgets spent a total of 2090 euros per inhabitant on education last year, compared to 2011 euros per inhabitant in the previous year. In relation to the population under the age of 30, education expenditure amounted to 6940 euros per capita last year, compared to 6737 euros in 2021.

At 122 billion euros, the federal states accounted for a good two thirds of public education expenditure last year, which was 5.2% more than in 2021. At municipal level, expenditure increased by 6% to a total of 41.8 billion euros. At 12.5 billion euros, federal education expenditure was 4.7 percent higher than the previous year.
