Prosecutor accuses individuals from the Last Generation.
The young environmentalist group known as The Last Generation is in hot water for allegedly orchestrating multiple destructive incidents. The authorities in Neuruppin have indicted five of its members, claiming they're members of a criminal organization. These actions took place between April 2022 and May 2023, targeting facilities at Schwedt's PCK oil refinery, Berlin's BER airport, and the Barberini Museum in Potsdam. The indictment includes charges of forming a criminal organization, disrupting businesses, coercion, and property damage.
The Neuruppin prosecutor's office stated that these activists are part of a specific subgroup within The Last Generation who were ready to commit more severe crimes and participated in them. Two individuals have been accused of being ringleaders and aiding the formation of a criminal organization. These investigations came about after police responded to disruptive protests carried out by environmental demonstrators in December 2022.
In addition, the Munich and Flensburg prosecutor's offices are also exploring charges against five members of the same group for allegedly being part of a criminal organization and two individuals for offering assistance.
If found guilty of the creation of a criminal organization, the leaders of this group could face up to five years in prison, with some even facing a possible ten-year sentence. The law states that their purpose or activity must have been focused on committing crimes with a maximum penalty of two years in prison, such as coercion - which was a major component of their controversial street protests - although another factor is that their criminal activities cannot be deemed insignificant.
