She posted an old photo of the two together and wrote: "I am still processing my immense sadness over the loss of my longtime friend Shannen, the woman I have often referred to as one of the strongest people I have ever known. Our connection was real and authentic." She continued, "We were often pitted against each other on screen, but that did not reflect the truth of our real relationship, which was built on mutual respect and admiration." Garth added: "She was brave, passionate, determined, and very loving and generous. I will miss her and honor her deeply in my heart and in my memories."
"Complicated Relationship" with Alyssa Milano
Alyssa Milano, who worked with Doherty on the series "Charmed", told "Entertainment Weekly": "It's no secret that Shannen and I had a complicated relationship." In a statement, the actress continued: "But at the core, she was someone I deeply respected and held in awe. She was a talented actress, loved by many, and the world will be less without her. My condolences to all who loved her."
"Charmed" star Rose McGowan also mourned Doherty on Instagram: "Shannen Doherty had the heart of a lion," McGowan wrote. "Passion for her craft was often misunderstood as a problem. Shannen was passion. I met her in the 90s and was impressed. Getting to know her later in life was a wonderful gift. This woman fought for her life."
Her "Charmed" co-star Brian Krause also paid tribute to Doherty's strength: "You taught me to be fearless and determined to live. To know your worth and to hold onto your decisions. I will always love you! Terribly sad."
US actress Olivia Munn, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer herself, paid tribute to Doherty via Instagram: "When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer, I was reminded of how bravely she let the world join her on her journey and I reached out to her. We became friends right away - something I honestly couldn't understand, as for me it was all about seeing her in '90210' when I was ten. The shared fight and the desire to help other women connected us. Even as she found herself in the final stages of her life, she offered me her support. 'Cancer is truly terrifying and Shannen faced it with such dignity, strength, and grace.'
Shannen Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer for the first time in 2015. At one point, she was reportedly cancer-free, but in 2017, breast cancer returned in the fourth stage. According to her own statements, she decided to go public again to prevent false reports. In 2020, she spoke about her cancer progression being advanced and that it was considered incurable. In June 2023, she revealed that she had metastases in the brain and by the end of 2023 that her bones were also affected by the cancer.
Despite Shannen Doherty's battles with Cancer, her popularity in Hollywood continued to shine. Her death at age 53 from breast cancer, which had returned and spread to her brain and bones, resulted in an outpouring of grief from her co-stars in both "Beverly Hills, 90210" and "Charmed." Hollywood mourned the loss of a talented actress who had always faced her challenges with bravery.
Following Doherty's demise, various entertainment outlets reported on the cause of death, shedding light on the recurrence and progression of her Cancer. Her courage in sharing her struggle with the public served as an inspiration for many battling the same disease, highlighting the impact of entertainers on society beyond just their on-screen personas.
