Princess Diana's dress auctioned off
A number of items from Princess Diana's former possessions are going under the hammer at a US auction house. An anonymous bidder forks out a good million dollars for a dress. With this purchase, he sets a new record.
A dress worn by Princess Diana in 1985 has now been auctioned off for a record price. An unknown buyer put 1.148 million dollars on the table at the US auction house Julien's Auctions. No item of clothing from the fashion icon, who died in 1997, has ever fetched so much money. This was reported by "People", the US celebrity magazine once owned the dress itself.
The original estimate was 100,000 dollars. The now pulverized record for the most expensive Diana dress sold at auction was only set at the beginning of this year: A purple evening gown from 1989 went for 604,800 dollars at Sotheby's in January.
Designed by Jacques Azagury
The new record dress was created by Moroccan-British designer Jacques Azagury. Lady Di wore it in 1985 in Florence, Italy, on a visit with her then husband, now King Charles III. A year later, Diana wore the gown again for a concert by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
The dress consists of a close-fitting velvet top with embroidered stars made of metallic threads and a ballerina skirt with a bow. According to Julien's Auctions, the skirt is a nod to Diana's love of dance and her role as patron of the English National Ballet.
The ballerina dress was not the only dress owned by Diana that has now been sold at Julien's Auctions. The pink blouse that Di wore in the official engagement photo from 1981 fetched 381,000 dollars. It also significantly exceeded the estimated value of 80,000 dollars.

The British Royal Family's connection to the auction world was further highlighted as a dress once owned by Diana, Princess of Wales, sold for an unprecedented 1.148 million dollars. This eye-catching piece, designed by Moroccan-British designer Jacques Azagury, was a memorable piece from Diana's wardrobe, worn during her visit to Florence, Italy with Prince Charles.
The record-breaking auction of Diana's dress showcased the strong demand for memorabilia from the life of the beloved Princess, further emphasizing her impact on the world of entertainment and popular culture.
