Great Britain - Prince William takes on lead role in documentary about homelessness

Prince William will continue to make his engagement against homelessness more known. In June 2023, he presented his new initiative "Homewards." This initiative aims to make homelessness in the UK "rare, short-lived, and not recurring."

For a year, the British heir allowed himself to be filmed while working for "Homewards." The two-part documentary "Prince William: We Can End Homelessness" (in German: "Prinz William: Wir können Obdachlosigkeit beenden") will be released on ITV1 in the autumn.

"Incredibly moving stories"

"Last year, we accompanied Prince William and the Royal Foundation during the first year of the 'Homewards' program. We heard some incredibly moving stories from people all over the country who are affected by homelessness," quoted US magazine "People" Leo Burley, the BAFTA-winning director of the docu. The two films will provide a comprehensive picture of homelessness in the UK and attract much attention to the issue through Prince William's prominence.

Fighting homelessness is a cause close to Prince William's heart

Fighting the homelessness crisis in his homeland has been an issue close to Prince William's heart for decades. He was introduced to this cause by his mother, Princess Diana (1961–1997), who took him and his brother Prince Harry on visits to homeless shelters as children. She did this to bring the real world outside the royal bubble closer to her sons.

So, William feels the same way today with his own children. The "Sunday Times" reported in June 2023 that he discusses the topic of homelessness with Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6, during their car rides to school. "On the way to school, we talk about it. While driving back and forth in London, we regularly see people sitting in front of supermarkets," he explained.

William finds it important that his children "grow up with the knowledge that some of us are very lucky, that some of us need a helping hand, and that some of us need to do more and help others improve their lives."

  1. Princess Diana, who had a profound impact on her sons, introduced Prince William to the issue of homelessness at a young age by taking him and Prince Harry to visit homeless shelters.
  2. In his ongoing commitment to combat homelessness in Great Britain, Prince William presented his new initiative "Homewards" in June 2023, aiming to make it rare, short-lived, and non-recurring.
  3. The two-part documentary "Prince William: We Can End Homelessness" provides a detailed portrait of homelessness in the UK and features Prince William in a leading role, capturing his dedication to the cause.
  4. Prince William regularly talks to his children about homelessness during their car rides, instilling in them a sense of empathy and the importance of helping those in need, following in his mother's footsteps.
