Prince William bid farewell to Kate at Olympia.
Actually, Prince William is a fan of sports events and wished he could attend the Olympics in Paris. However, given his wife Kate's condition, he chose to stay away. The risk of infecting her with COVID, who has cancer, was too high.
During a sports event, Prince William shared that he had to skip the Olympics this year to prevent bringing COVID home while his wife was undergoing chemotherapy. He explained his absence at the event in Paris in July, where other British dignitaries like Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer were present, as a precaution against contracting the virus and spreading it.
However, during his visit to a swimming center in Gateshead, where he interacted with Olympians and Paralympians, he expressed his disappointment. As "Sky" reported, William admitted that he "would have loved" to be in Paris.
Discovering COVID risks
Prince William didn't elaborate on why he was concerned about a potential COVID infection during his conversation with Olympic swimmer Adam Peaty, Tom Dean, and Paralympians Maisie Summers-Newton and Louise Fiddes. However, the virus was still prevalent at the event. Peaty, for instance, came close to winning gold in the men's 100-meter breaststroke but settled for silver. The next day, he announced that he had tested positive for COVID.
"I really wanted to go, but after reading about COVID, I decided it wasn't worth risking bringing the virus home while my wife is undergoing chemotherapy," William said now, adding, "But we watched everything. We cheered daily."
No concerns at Euro 2020
His concerns seemed to dissipate during UEFA European Football Championship in Germany in June and July. Prince William attended three different stadiums during the tournament. On June 20, he cheered on the Three Lions at a group stage match against Denmark. He also avoided missing the quarter-final match against Switzerland on July 6. And he was present for the final match against Spain on July 14.
Prince William's wife, Kate, the Princess of Wales, announced in March that she had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy, which can impair the body's resistance against infections like COVID. Last month, the royal family announced that she had completed her treatment.
Despite his desire to attend the Olympics in Paris, Prince William had to prioritize his wife's health due to her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy. Therefore, he opted to stay away to prevent bringing COVID-19 home.
Referencing a past interview, the Princess of Wales expressed her husband's regret at missing the Olympics, mentioning, "He would have loved to be in Paris."
