President Al-Sisi re-elected in Egypt
Head of state Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has been re-elected with a large majority in the presidential election in Egypt and can therefore remain in office until at least 2030.
Al-Sisi received 89.6 percent of the vote, the electoral authority announced on Monday. None of the three opposing candidates achieved five percent of the votes cast. The election was conducted in an orderly manner overall, said Hasim Badawi, chairman of the electoral authority. "There were no violations or irregularities that disrupted the election process."
The election was heavily overshadowed by the war in the neighboring Gaza Strip. Al-Sisi was also under pressure due to the severe economic crisis in the country. Countless families are struggling with an inflation rate of 35 percent and high unemployment, and are slipping into poverty. However, it was already considered certain that Al-Sisi would win the election.
Al-Sisi came to power following a military coup in 2013 and has ruled the country with a heavy hand ever since. According to critics, there have been no free elections in the country since he came to power and any serious opposition has been almost completely stifled.

Al-Sisi's third term as President of Egypt commences after his re-election, allowing him to serve until 2030. Despite the challenges posed by the Gaza Strip conflict and Egypt's economic crisis, Al-Sisi secured an overwhelming victory with over 89% of the vote.
