Potential forest fires in the northern regions, while southern areas experience intense thunderstorms.

During the week in Germany, two distinct weather patterns will prevail: the north will experience warm, dry conditions with a high potential for forest fires; meanwhile, the south will get cloudy due to low pressure systems. Meteorologist Björn Alexander of ntv predicts that the situation should improve by Whitsun.

Will Whitsun be wonderful in Germany? What do we expect weather-wise?

Björn Alexander: The upcoming long weekend has us facing two opposite weather systems battling for control of Germany. In the north-eastern region, "Uwe" is bringing warmth and dryness, raising concerns for forest fires. In contrast, the southwestern part of the country could see rain and storms due to lows "Ildiko" and "Juli," which are moving in from France and the Benelux countries.

What kind of consequences will these weather systems bring?

Northern Germany will remain warm and dry throughout early summer, increasing the risk of forest fires. However, the southwestern half of the country may experience heavy thunderstorms, lowering temperatures and potentially causing severe weather.

How much will the temperature drop and how severe are the forest fires?

During the thunderstorms, temperatures may drop between 5 to 10 degrees, with a possible maximum limit of 15 degrees. Meanwhile, temperatures in the north-east hover around 24 to 27 degrees with abundant sunshine, exacerbating the risk of forest fires in areas like the Elbe region.

Can we expect more storms?

Yes. These thunderstorms carry the potential for heavy rain, with possibilities of hail, squalls, and lightning activity. However, not everyone will be affected. The south-western regions may experience the worst of it, with an elevated risk of severe weather.

Will the extreme weather persist until Whitsun?

The weather models remain uncertain about Whitsun's pattern. Most likely, the north and north-east of the country will see clear skies, though the coastal areas may wind up as the sunniest spots. Weak low pressure could affect the entire country and make for more unpredictable weather, with a mix of sunny spells and occasional downpours with thunderstorms.

Any chance of estimating the amount of rain?

Up to Whit Monday, regions like the Lower Rhine, Münsterland, western low mountain ranges down to the Black Forest, and the Alps could see 20 to 60, even over 100 liters of rain per square meter. Areas beyond the Alps, like Switzerland, northern Italy, Austria, and Slovenia, could receive even larger totals.

How much rain, specifically?

Rainfall measurements stretch from 100 to 150 liters per square meter up to Monday. In the worst of the scenarios, northern Italy near Milan might witness over 300 liters per square meter, which is almost half of Berlin's annual precipitation.

Can we describe the midweek weather in detail?

The northern and eastern regions can expect sunny skies on Wednesday and Thursday, with temperatures peaking at a maximum of 25 to 27 degrees. Southern Germany, on the other hand, will see a higher propensity for showering and thunderstorms, starting from Wednesday afternoon. The southwest may experience heavy thunderstorms with a high potential for flash flooding.

What temperatures should we expect?

The maximum temperature on Wednesday will range from 16 to 20 degrees in the affected areas. With sunshine, temperatures may rise to 25 to 27 degrees. A quick and strong south-easterly wind is also expected.

What about the temperatures this weekend?

It will be a chilly 14 to 23 degrees on Saturday. Pentecost Sunday will see 17 to 24 degrees, and Pentecost Monday could hit 18 to 26 degrees, setting the stage for an early summer-like weekend.

Will we wrapped in warm sunshine in Whitsun?

It remains to be seen how these weather trends will play out, but early summer conditions could be within reach for the final days of the holiday weekend.

Given the current weather patterns and forecasts, international aid might be necessary to combat the increasing forest fires in the north-eastern regions of Germany, as the dry conditions persist. Additionally, the southwestern areas may face severe weather due to the heavy thunderstorms, requiring appropriate emergency measures to dealing with potential floods and damage.
