Police search homes of climate activists
Climate activists are spraying festively decorated Christmas trees with orange paint in several major cities - including Berlin. The actions have now had consequences: police raided three apartments belonging to members of the Last Generation and seized hundreds of tubes of glue.
Following paint attacks on Christmas trees by activists from the Last Generation climate group, three apartments in Berlin have been searched. During the operation, more than 520 tubes of glue and containers of paint and quartz sand were confiscated, according to police and the Berlin public prosecutor's office.
Four climate activists had previously sprayed two Christmas trees in Berlin, one in front of a shopping arcade with a value of around 130,000 euros and one in front of the Bundesrat building, orange with paint from fire extinguishers. The four members of the group, aged between 19 and 43, were provisionally arrested.
Search warrants were issued for three of them on the same day; the home of an activist living in Lower Saxony was not affected. All were released. The State Criminal Police Office is investigating.
"Charity = climate protection!"
Christmas trees in central locations in other cities were also sprayed with paint. These included a tree in Leipzig's Mädlerpassage, which is popular with tourists, as well as other trees in Oldenburg, Kiel, Rostock, Nuremberg and Munich, according to the group. The demonstrators also carried banners with the slogan: "Contemplatively into the catastrophe? Charity = climate protection!"
The Last Generation has been demonstrating and protesting for more climate protection with road blockades and other actions since the beginning of 2022. Among other things, the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin was sprayed with paint. Numerous investigations and trials are underway against members of the group, and many have already been convicted.
