Lauf an der Pegnitz - Police officers shoot suspected knife attacker
A man who is reported to have attacked three federal police officers with a knife on Sunday in Lauf an der Pegnitz near Nuremberg has died after a police shooting. The man reportedly collapsed at the scene near the train station, according to a spokesperson for the Mittelfranken police in the evening. First aid measures were unable to save his life.
Knife Attack in Lauf an der Pegnitz: Motive Unclear
According to a police spokesperson, a 34-year-old suspect initially approached a patrol car of the federal police on patrol. When the officers got out, he reportedly went after them. "A knife was also involved in this," the spokesperson said. The officers were reportedly unharmed.
Regarding how many shots were fired during the operation, who fired them, and where they hit the man, the spokesperson made no comments. He also remained silent on the motives behind the attack.
Previously, the police had reported via X that a shooting had occurred following an attack on federal police officers. In another post on X, it was stated that a larger operation was ongoing. "We have numerous forces on site. Please avoid the area. There is no danger to the population." According to the police spokesperson, the area in front of the train station was cordoned off.
The knife attack took place in Lauf an der Pegnitz, which is located in Middle Franconia, close to Nuremberg. The Federal Police had to intervene due to the hostile situation. Despite first aid attempts, the man who attacked the officers with a knife on Sunday sadly passed away following a police shooting.
