Police officer critically injured in knife attack in Mannheim

A man resulted in injuries of six individuals and one police officer critically during a stabbing incident at Mannheim marketplace. This happened during an Islam-critical protest by Pax Europa, which the attack targeted.

Islam-critical demonstrators in Mannheim faced a violent attack when a man assaulted them with a knife, resulting in wounds to six people. One of the police officers is battling for his life, as per Baden-Württemberg's interior minister, Thomas Strobl. According to Stefanie Kizina, the treasurer of Pax Europa, Michael Stürzenberger, a board member, was also injured in the incident.

The man who committed the attack was shot down by the authorities, as per the Karlsruhe-based department handling political crimes. Thomas Strobl, the interior minister, couldn't comment on the motive behind the attack.

The Federal Interior minister, Nancy Faeser, mentioned that if an Islamic motivation is found, it would emphasize the danger of Islamic violent activities. She had previously cautioned about this issue.

Mayor of Mannheim, Christian Specht, identified this assault as a terrorist act. Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor, established it as an attempted murder and denounced the crime, while Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier followed with similar criticism.

Treasurer of Pax Europa, Kizina, explained that Stürzenberger was struck in the face and leg, and he was to undergo an operation. Kizina recalled: "He's one of the key figures of the organization, but he's not in immediate danger."

Pax Europa condemns both Islam and Islamism on their website, characterizing them as "aggressive contempt." The Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution mentioned in their 2022 report that Stürzenberger and the Bavarian Pax Europa conducted efforts against "constitutionally relevant anti-Islamic efforts" that restricted religious freedom for Muslims. They were absent from the 2023 report for lesser activity, but still monitored.

A video of the incident surfaced online, showing the attacker maneuvering his knife and harming multiple individuals during the protest. As per police, prosecutors, and the criminal investigation office, a shot was discharged.

The police officer suffering from critical injuries had previously safeguarded a wounded member before sustaining multiple stabs in the head by the assailant. The five other victims mentioned are members of Pax Europa. Thomas Strobl, the interior minister, appreciated the prompt response of the police: "Due to the fearless deeds, we don't have more injured people."

The attacker's identity was vague, and Mannheim's bustling marketplace saw a cordoned-off market square with protection screens nearby and a shuttered tram station. The authorities employed a rescue helicopter to treat the injured, while investigators collected evidence.

Overwhelmed, Chancellor Scholz described the scenario as "shocking." He tweeted, "The images from Mannheim are terrible. Several people have been severely injured by an attacker. My thoughts are with the victims. Physical violence is never acclimated in our democracy. The perpetrator deserves severe punishment."

Federal President Steinmeier expressed his ire, saying, "I fiercely condemn the attack in Mannheim. In our democracy, no place is for violence; violence makes a mess of democracy. Freedom of expression is a valuable good."

Conclusion

A critic around 60, Michael Stürzenberger, survived a stabbing ordeal at the Mannheim marketplace. Six people, including a critically injured officer, are recovering in hospitals. The attack targeted Stürzenberger and a specific demonstration organized by his organization, Pax Europa, which criticizes Islam and Islamism. The police shot down the attacker, but no information on motive is yet available. Chancellor Scholz viewed it as an attempt at murder, while Olaf Scholz and President Steinmeier castigated it. The 59-year-old Stürzenberger is a leading Pax Europa figure. The Pax Europa treasurer, Stefanie Kizina, elaborated, "He was hit in the leg and the face, he will be operated on. There's no immediate danger to his life." Medics swiftly secured the location and treated the injured, with witnesses present giving statements.
