Police in France fatally shoot a suspected murderer.
In Rouen, France, thick smoke billows near a synagogue, leading the police to suspect an attempted arson attack. An individual armed with a knife and an iron bar appears on the scene, charging toward the officers. They react, opening fire and fatally wounding the attacker.
The national Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, shares the news on social media, commending the authorities for their "promptness and bravery". Apparently, the local police had detected "a smoke development close to the synagogue." When they approached the structure, they encountered a man armed with both a knife and an iron bar. Reacting to the potential threat, the officers fired their weapons, resulting in the man's death.
Following the incident, officials from the public prosecutor's office in Rouen launched two separate investigations. Prosecutor Frédéric Teillet spoke with AFP, noting that the office was looking into potential arson and aggression against public officials. He also mentioned that they would examine the circumstances surrounding the death of the armed suspect.
Despite the swift response from the authorities, the motives and identity of the attacker remain elusive. The fire damage has reportedly been contained, and the city government issued a statement of disbelief in the face of the events, with the mayor of Rouen expressing the city of Rouen's "shock and sadness."
