Poland allocates 677 million euros for modern American missiles
In the midst of Russia's ongoing war with Ukraine, Poland is investing €677 million in advanced US cruise missiles. According to the Polish Ministry of Defense, the conflict in Ukraine has demonstrated the significance of being able to target enemies from a considerable distance. By acquiring these missiles, Warsaw aims to enhance its defensive capacities against any potential Russian danger.
The upcoming missiles, which are of the JASSM (Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile) type, possess a range of approximately 1,000 kilometers. These missiles are to be given to Poland by Washington between 2026 and 2030. Right now, Poland already possesses JASSM missiles that have a range of 370 kilometers and are employed on its F-16 fighter jets.
The imminent arms transaction is anticipated to be formally finalized on Tuesday. It is part of a swift modernization of the Polish army in response to Russia's threat. Poland is a NATO and EU member state with a defense budget that accounts for roughly 4% of its GDP. This makes Poland's military spending one of the highest among all NATO countries. In recent times, the government in Warsaw has authorized several weapons acquisitions, particularly from the US and South Korea.
Ever since Russia's aggression toward Ukraine commenced in February 2022, Poland has been one of Ukraine's strongest backers. Poland shares borders not only with Ukraine but also with Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave, and Belarus, an ally of Russia. Poland worries about potentially becoming a target of Russian aggression itself.
