- Pizza for 65 euros: Flavio Briatore is a critic of usury prices
Flavio Briatore's latest restaurant in Naples, with pizza prices up to 65 euros, has landed him in hot water. The city's pizza makers' association accuses the 74-year-old former Formula 1 manager of betraying the entire trade's tradition.
The former team principal of the Benetton and Renault Formula 1 teams plans to open another branch of his pizzeria chain "Crazy Pizza" on Naples' waterfront after the summer break. Briatore, who has a grown-up daughter named Leni with Heidi Klum, already owns several luxury pizzerias in cities like London, Monte Carlo, and Saint-Tropez.
Flavio Briatore defends his pizza prices
The menu of his new Naples establishment includes a 65-euro pizza topped with Spanish acorn-fed Iberian ham Pata Negra. Other prices are also steep. A classic Margherita, for instance, is priced at 17 euros. For comparison, elsewhere in pizza-loving Naples, a Margherita with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil typically costs around four euros, rarely exceeding nine.
The local pizza makers' association commented: "This is not in line with our tradition. Pizza is a dish for the people; it shouldn't be too expensive." In an interview, Briatore defended himself: "I'm convinced that the price for a quality pizza in a luxury restaurant with qualified staff, DJs, and entertainment is absolutely reasonable." He also points to his Milan restaurant, where the Margherita pizza also costs 17 euros, which he doesn't consider excessive. For those interested, the exclusive Pata Negra pizza in Milan costs 68 euros, and in Saint-Tropez, a truffle pizza is served for 75 euros.
Leni Klum, Flavio Briatore's daughter with Heidi Klum, might enjoy a meal at her father's new Naples pizzeria, "Crazy Pizza." Despite the city's pizza makers' association's criticism regarding the high prices, Leni might appreciate the luxury dining experience and unique offerings like the 65-euro Pata Negra pizza.
