Singer Patti Smith is unexpectedly hospitalized during her tour of Italy. Although the 76-year-old "Godmother of Punk" was able to leave the clinic in Bologna after just one day, her next concerts were still canceled.
Patti Smith is apparently on the mend again after a stay in hospital in Bologna. As the "Los Angeles Times" reports, the singer was able to leave the clinic again on Wednesday. Previously, a concert planned for Tuesday had to be canceled for health reasons. Further appearances have also been canceled for the time being.
The singer-songwriter known as the "Godmother of Punk" was discharged from hospital after a day. This was announced by the local health authority in Bologna, according to the Los Angeles Times. The 76-year-old was discharged "after a short observation period in the emergency room" and is "in good health". The medical team also stated that the "Because the Night" singer would be able to return to the stage after an "appropriate rest period". The newspaper published a picture of Smith laughing with hospital staff.
Remembrance of deceased colleague
Smith suddenly fell ill in the middle of her Italian tour on Tuesday. She had actually been due to perform at the Duse Theater in Bologna that evening. In a statement on Instagram, the theater explained: "It is with great regret that we inform the audience that Patti Smith's concert cannot take place due to a sudden illness of the artist." The exact health circumstances that led to her hospitalization are not yet known. However, on Wednesday, the day she was discharged from hospital, Smith was already back in touch with an Instagram post, remembering the birthday of singer Tom Verlaine, who died in January and would have turned 74 on December 13.
Smith has been on tour in Italy for days. She has already performed in Modena, Naples, Pescara and Ancona. Her last performance to date took place on December 11 in Siena Cathedral. Not only the concert in Bologna has been canceled, but also her upcoming appearances in Venice and Milan. It is still unclear whether the dates will be rescheduled.
