Environment: Temperature and Climate Changes - Pakistan issues heat alert with temperatures reaching over 50 degrees.

High temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius have triggered a heat alert for pregnant women and the elderly in Pakistan. The Climate Change Ministry has voiced concerns, highlighting these groups' increased vulnerability. A spokesperson added that heatwaves are becoming more intense, frequent, and prolonged than in the past.

The scorching heat reached 53 degrees Celsius in the historic city of Mohenjo Daro, located on the Indus River, on Sunday. This heatwave is predicted to continue until the end of the month. Earlier this week, Pakistani authorities ordered a multi-day shutdown of schools due to the sweltering conditions. This heatwave comes after some unusually heavy rainfall in the preceding month.

Pakistan has experienced a rise in extreme weather events, which experts link to climate change. Two summers ago, the nation was hit by a devastating flood disaster that temporarily inundated a third of the country, resulting in over 1,700 fatalities.
