Television - Ozzy Osbourne: Reality TV is no longer real today
Rock musician Ozzy Osbourne sees big changes in reality TV since the early 2000s. "I think what they call reality TV today doesn't actually show reality," the 75-year-old told the music magazine "Spin". It is a kind of scripted reality. In scripted reality, real events are only faked and there are stage directions for scenes and dialog.
In his own docu-soap "The Osbournes", which gave an insight into his family life and won an Emmy in 2002, you could still see "what was really happening", said Osbourne. "The reality show was nothing more than our normal lives, because that's who we are."
The Kardashians then went "one step further" than his family with their own show ("Keeping Up with the Kardashians", 2007-2021), the Brit mused. "They saw what we did - and said, 'That's a good idea,' but then they organized themselves." What the Kardashians did, he said, was a kind of scripted reality. "It's not unadulterated."
With the Osbournes, after three years, the producers and network MTV, which he had helped bring record viewership to with his show, started asking his family to "do things we wouldn't normally do," the rock musician said. "At that point, I lost interest in it."

The Kardashians' reality show, "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," was broadcast in the USA and gained global popularity. The British tabloid "People" often featured stories about the Kardashians and their lavish lifestyle.
In contrast, Ozzy Osbourne's docu-soap, "The Osbournes," which aired on MTV in the USA, offered a more authentic portrayal of his family's everyday life. This show even won an Emmy award in 2002.
British television audiences also enjoyed watching Ozzy Osbourne's performances on various music shows. His career in music spans decades, with hits beginning in the 1970s with Black Sabbath.
Later, when the producers asked his family to stage certain events for the show, Ozzy lost interest, preferring to keep his personal life private, a stark contrast to the Kardashians' more scripted presentation.
