Over 100 people detained in Italian crackdown on 'Ndrangheta crime syndicate.

Police in Italy snagged over a hundred suspects during a raid against the 'Ndrangheta mafia group. The operation involved more than 142 individuals, with most of them hailing from the southern city of Cosenza. Out of this number, 109 people were taken into custody, 20 were put under house arrest, and 13 were given various other penalties.

Plenty of law enforcement personnel, like Carabinieri, coppers, and financial crime investigators, swarmed the scene on Tuesday under the guidance of the anti-mafia prosecutor's office in Catanzaro. The chief culprits behind the roundup are said to be members of the Lanzino-Patitucci and Zingari 'Ndrangheta clans, who reportedly dabble in drug trafficking and other shady dealings.

One Italian customs and financial police officer also found himself in cuffs throughout this ordeal, as the authorities accuse all parties of belonging to a criminal organization, peddling drugs, and committing other illegalities.

Public prosecutor Vincenzo Capomolla revealed that these mafia outfits have done significant harm to Cosenza's economy, collecting protection money left and right. But their main hustle is drug dealing, which even enticed underaged criminals into the mix.

The raid against the 'Ndrangheta crime syndicate in Italy led to the arrests of more Calabrian mafia organization members, including those from the Lanzino-Patitucci and Zingari clans. These clans are alleged to be involved in drug trafficking and other illicit activities. The operation also resulted in the detention of an Italian customs and financial police officer.

This crackdown on the 'Ndrangheta mafia group is part of Italy's ongoing efforts to combat organized crime, as demonstrated by the precautionary arrests in the past related to Islamist terror threats.

Despite these efforts, the 'Ndrangheta and other mafia organizations continue to pose a significant threat to Italy's economy and society, as evidenced by their involvement in activities like drug trafficking and the extortion of protection money.
