The opera singer and entertainer Gunther Emmerlich is dead. He died unexpectedly at the age of 79. Just a few days ago, he performed at a Christmas concert.
A few days after a Christmas concert, singer and entertainer Gunther Emmerlich died at home at the age of 79. This was reported by MDR-Thüringen. According to his management, the cause was heart failure.
Emmerlich was born on September 18, 1944 in Eisenberg, Thuringia, but had lived in Dresden for many years. The opera singer, who trained in Weimar, performed regularly at the Semperoper, among other venues. According to MDR, he was a member of its permanent ensemble for 20 years.
He was also known to a wide audience in the GDR through television appearances on major classical music and opera galas. He also hosted shows such as the entertainment formats "Ein Kessel Buntes" and "Nacht der Prominenten". This made him a television favorite. He was awarded the Bambi in 1990 and the Federal Cross of Merit in 1997.
On Sunday, Emmerlich made a surprise appearance at a Christmas concert in Lößnitz, Saxony. He also recently appeared on the MDR talk show "Riverboat".
