Election in Great Britain - One resident defies the change in Downing Street

Everything is different after the British Parliament election. Everything? No. In reality, there is one personality that even new Prime Minister Keir Starmer cannot shake. Kater Larry remains "Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office", or the top mouse hunter. The position is listed on the official website of the British government.

The animal has lived in Downing Street for 13.5 years and is long considered a secret ruler. Starmer is the sixth prime minister to live with Larry. The cat has lived in Downing Street longer than any prime minister since the end of the 19th century, and only four prime ministers have served longer in office.

David Cameron brought the cat to the government building in 2011 to solve the rat problem. Primarily, however, the animal keeps waiting journalists busy, such as during pigeon hunts. As a public figure, Larry naturally also has an - unofficial - account on the platform X. With approximately 840,000 followers, "@Number10Cat" keeps many government members in check.

The previous prime ministers all had dogs - Rishi Sunak had Nova, Boris Johnson's Four-pawer is called Dilyn - but there could be a furry competition under Starmer. Starmer's family already has a cat named Jojo. The kingdom is eagerly awaiting whether the two cats will get along.

Downing Street for Larry

The miscellaneous addition of an animal to Downing Street's government affairs has always been a point of interest, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer now joining the ranks of those sharing their space with a feline, specifically Larry. As a choice made by former Prime Minister David Cameron to combat a rat problem, Larry has since become a significant figure, outliving five prime ministers and even surpassing their tenures. In fact, the length of Larry's rule in Downing Street is a point of amusement for some, with Parliamentary elections and changes in leadership seemingly having little impact on the cat's high position. Despite many prime ministers favoring dogs, such as Rishi Sunak's Nova and Boris Johnson's Dilyn, Larry's influence and popularity remain undisputed, even boasting a large following on the X platform. With Starmer and his cat Jojo settled in, the future of Downing Street's unique furry dynamic is an anticipated topic among the people of Great Britain, particularly London.
