NY officials heighten security measures due to ISIS-K threat targeting Men's T20 Cricket World Cup.
A few weeks ago, Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick J. Ryder revealed that there had been a terrorist threat linked to ISIS-K in regards to upcoming cricket matches. This threat was then followed by more specific threats targeting the India vs Pakistan game on June 9th and references to a viral video urging a 'lone wolf' to commit an attack.
The tournaments begin this weekend at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium located in Eisenhower Park.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman described the situation, saying, “This is like the Super Bowl on steroids. Teams from all over the world will be participating, and fans from all over the globe will be attending the event in Nassau County. We've been working closely with different authorities for over half a year to discuss potential security issues and health concerns related to such a significant event.”
Blakeman also highlighted their collaboration with federal agencies such as the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and other law enforcement and security organizations.
Blakeman added, “We take every warning seriously. We have the same processes in place for every threat. To make sure people are safe, we've implemented numerous security measures and ensured the safety of the stadium and nearby Eisenhower Park.”
Commissioner Ryder then revealed the scale of the operation and assured the public of their safety.
"We've never had to carry out a security operation this extensive before in Nassau County," Ryder said. "And I can assure you this - the most secure place to be in Nassau County on June 9th will be inside the stadium."
CNN's Christina Zdanowicz aided in putting together this report.
