"No more success": Last generation in Austria pauses protests

What the Last Generation has achieved is a matter of debate. In Austria, climate activists are now taking action. However, they do so by announcing a restart.

- "No more success": Last generation in Austria pauses protests

The climate alliance "Last Generation" is suspending its protests in Austria. "We no longer see a perspective for success," the alliance said. For two and a half years, they have been trying to move the government from the conservative ÖVP and Greens, as well as the public, away from fossil fuels through diverse actions. Now, they acknowledge that "Austria wants to continue in fossil ignorance and thus accepts being complicit in the death of billions of people."

The remaining funds will be used to cover the costs of numerous legal proceedings against members of Last Generation. Individual climate activists may have to pay tens of thousands of euros.

However, the end of the campaign does not mean that there will be no more climate protests in Austria in the future - but under a new name. "We are making room for something new to emerge. We have politicized more people than ever before and planted seeds for a peaceful uprising," they said.

Last Generation in Germany continues to protest

The Last Generation Austria has been making headlines since early 2022 with numerous actions. The climate activists have glued themselves to streets, disrupted shareholders' meetings, interrupted music concerts and theater performances, and have also participated in protests at European airports.

In Germany, there is no plan to end the protests, quite the contrary, said a spokesperson for Last Generation, Marion Fabian. There will be further actions at airports against climate-damaging air traffic, among other things, she announced.

Despite suspending protests in Austria, the climate alarm bell continues to ring, as Last Generation in Germany continues their actions against climate-damaging air traffic. The suspension of protests in Austria does not signify an end to climate activism, as the activists assert, "We are making room for something new to emerge."
