New York Times: A different contentious flag seen outside a Samuel Alito's property
Quoting from neighbors and photographs, the New York Times shares that "Appeal to Heaven" flags were seen at Justice Alito's property during summer. This flag traces back to the Revolutionary War era and has been adopted by supporters of former President Donald Trump.
Neither Alito nor the Supreme Court responded to requests for comment.
This discovery comes shortly after a controversial incident involving an upside-down American flag on display at Alito's home in Virginia in 2021. Alito claimed it was raised by his wife as a response to a quarrel with neighbors.
The display of the controversial flag has prompted criticism from various parties, including Democrats and prominent Republican senators. They have called for Alito to withdraw himself from cases involving Trump and the attack on the Capitol in 2021.
Similar to the upside-down US flag, the "Appeal to Heaven" flag, also known as the "Pine Tree Flag," was showcased during the attack on the Capitol.
One more House Speaker, Mike Johnson, faced backlash for exhibiting this same flag outside his office before assuming his position. The flag remains prominently displayed outside his office as of now.
