New Weinstein trial coming in November
Harvey Weinstein was already sentenced to 23 years in prison, but the legal proceedings against him are not yet over. He had to appear for a hearing at the New York courthouse in Manhattan again on Tuesday. Weinstein made a weak impression and had to be wheeled to his seat in a wheelchair. The district attorney's office stated that realistically, a new trial could begin in November. Currently, investigations are still ongoing, and the gained knowledge cannot yet be presented to a grand jury.
According to the deputy district attorney Nicole Blumberg, there are still allegations from potential victims being investigated who could not testify during the first New York trial against Weinstein. "People are still investigating in this traumatic matter," she said, "it's an ongoing process." Weinstein's attorney Arthur Aidala told "ABC News" that this was just a delaying tactic by the authorities.
First Judgment in New York Overturned
The former film producer was first sentenced to 23 years in prison by a New York court in 2020 for rape and sexual assault. However, in April, the judgment was overturned by the highest court in the state of New York. The reason: The presiding judge allowed statements from women to be made during the trial who were not victims and spoke negatively about Weinstein. This had nothing to do with the case and may have influenced the jury.
Despite the overturning of the verdict by the highest court, Weinstein remains in prison as he was sentenced to 16 years in prison in Los Angeles in 2022 for sexual offenses. The sentence was confirmed in early 2023. The #metoo movement, which drew global attention to sexual assaults, began in 2017 with the allegations against Weinstein.
The ongoing investigations into Harvey Weinstein's alleged sexual misconduct in New York could potentially uncover new testimonies from potential victims, as mentioned by the deputy district attorney, Nicole Blumberg. The entertainment industry, particularly Hollywood, has been under scrutiny following the sexual harassment allegations against Weinstein, which sparked the global #MeToo movement.
