Streaming - Netflix's 'Bridgerton' has had Hundreds of Millions of Views

The American costume series "Bridgerton" has become one of the biggest successes for Netflix overall. All three seasons are in the Top Ten of the most successful English-language series (Category "Most Popular TV (English)").

The third and newest season has already gathered more views than the second season, which was released in the spring of 2022. The third "Bridgerton" season focuses primarily on Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and her love story with Colin, the third son of the Bridgertons, a well-known story among fans.

Together, the three "Bridgerton" seasons have already achieved over 307 million views worldwide (as of July 21). The third "Bridgerton" season, released in two parts on May 16 and June 13, has already reached 100.3 million views.

Views are calculated hours watched divided by the total runtime. Season two has 93.8 million views, and season one has 113.3 million views. The fourth season is expected to be released possibly in 2026, and it will reportedly focus on the love story of the rogue and second oldest Bridgerton brother Benedict (Luke Thompson).

Netflix maintains four Top-10 Best Listings for different categories (for "Film" in both English and non-English languages, and for "TV" or series, in both English and non-English languages). These lists are based on calls in the first 91 days. Netflix does not provide longer-term access figures.

"Bridgerton" likely has more fans than "Stranger Things"

For comparison with "Bridgerton": Only seasons three and four of the science fiction mystery hit "Stranger Things," which Netflix recently updated in Los Gatos on a Tuesday, made it into the English-language series Best List. For these two seasons, a combined 235.5 million views were registered in the first three months. The fifth and final season of the mysterious retro series is expected for 2025.

In the category where "Bridgerton" and "Stranger Things" are listed, the comedy-horror series "Wednesday" from 2022 ranks first with 252 million views. It currently has only one season. The second season with Jenna Ortega in the lead role is currently being produced and is expected to be released in 2025.

"Bridgerton" is also famous for colorblind casting

The first season of "Bridgerton" was released at Christmas 2020. Created by Chris Van Dusen and produced by Shonda Rhimes, the series takes place in a fictional London of the 19th century. It's about love triangles and scandals in British high society, observed and commented on by the mysterious Lady Whistledown. The series is based on a novel series by the American author Julia Quinn.

"Bridgerton" is one of the most prominent examples of colorblind casting (colorblind casting). In other words, non-white actresses and actors play roles that would have been played by whites in the past due to perceived historical correctness.

Netflix announced just a few days ago that it had gained over eight million new customer households in the previous quarter, likely due to "Bridgerton." Worldwide, Netflix now has approximately 278 million customer households.

Since last year, Netflix no longer allows password sharing. This also contributes to the growth in user numbers, as many former freeloaders have obtained their own subscriptions instead of returning to Netflix.

Each year, the streaming giant Netflix spends approximately 17 billion Dollars on series, films, and live shows. Netflix is profitable, while competitors like Disney and Paramount struggle to turn their streaming offerings into the black.

A advantage for Netflix is producing films and series in various countries. They reach high viewer numbers in home markets - and sometimes even become international hits.

A prime example of this is the South Korean series "Squid Game." A second season is planned for 2024. In the category of non-English language series, the production leads with 265.2 million views.
