Back in 1998, Manu Chao struck a chord globally with "Bongo Bongo", a standout track from his successful album "Clandestino". Fast-forward seventeen years, and the French musicians with Basque-Galician roots is dropping a new album titled "Viva Tu", his first studio release since then.
With 13 tracks under its belt, this collection spans a variety of languages: French, English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The signature melodies, rhythms, and themes that have garnered Chao numerous accolades are ever-present on "Viva Tu". The 63-year-old artist continues to innovate the "Mestizo" style, a blend of rock, reggae, ska, and traditional Latin American sounds, commonly categorized as world music, which he introduced with "Clandestino".
Chao doesn't shy away from experimenting, though. Collaborations with American country legend Willie Nelson on a track titled "Heaven's Bad Day" and Spanish musician Laeti on "Tu Te Vas" testify to this.
This summer, fans will have the opportunity to catch Chao's live performances primarily in non-European locations, such as Mexico and California. With planned shows in major European cities like Berlin, Paris, London, Barcelona, and Madrid, he's set to return to the Old World. Specific dates have yet to be announced, but you can check out his website and Instagram for updates.
Propelling the excitement even further, Chao released his first single from "Viva Tu" in June - "São Paulo Motoboy," dedicated to the dedicated motorcycle couriers of São Paulo, Brazil, who also inspired a documentary by the artist.
This new album, titled "Viva Tu," showcases Manu Chao's versatility in languages, including French, English, Spanish, and Portuguese, reflecting his international popularity. During his upcoming tour, fans in Spain, specifically Barcelona and Madrid, can look forward to experiencing his live performances.
