A horrific incident takes place on the Ballermann: At least four individuals lost their lives when a restaurant collapsed on Playa de Palma in Mallorca on Thursday night. Sixteen other people sustained injuries, some gravely, according to authorities on this popular Spanish vacation spot. The cause of this accident and the identities of the deceased remained undisclosed. However, it's believed that both tourists and employees, as well as locals, may have been among the victims. After midnight, first responders continued their efforts to uncover potential survivors under the debris.
This unfortunate event took place right on the beach and was merely a few streets away from popular establishments like Megapark and Bierkönig. The Medusa Beach Club building suddenly collapsed around 8:30 pm, with eyewitnesses claiming it collapsed from the first floor down to the basement. However, before midnight, a police spokesman shared positive news: "The likelihood of finding more victims among the rubble is near zero," he said.
A local named Javier recounted how he heard the building crumble on Cartago Street. "It sounded like a bomb," he told a reporter from the regional newspaper "Última Hora." Others mentioned that the building had undergone renovations "a few years ago." The part of the second floor that decimated served as a chill-out area.
Restaurant packed
At the time of the collapse, the restaurant, which doubled as a cocktail bar with live music and entertainment, was packed with patrons. Around midnight, teams from the police, fire department, and emergency services were still working at the scene of the disaster. Psychologists continued to provide support to both victims and witnesses of this tragedy.
Both local newspapers "Diario de Mallorca" and "Última Hora" reported that approximately 1,000 people flocked to the accident site in the hours following the collapse. Family members of employees worried for their loved ones' well-being. The mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, and the city's first deputy mayor, Javier Bonet, also visited the crime scene out of concern and to witness the rescue operations first-hand. Since April's conclusion, Playa de Palma has been full of tourists, many of whom hail from Germany—in contrast to the visitors to the English party haven of Magaluf to the west of Palma.
