More manufacturers adopt temporary purchase premium for e-cars
Following the abrupt end of the subsidy, the Chinese e-car manufacturer Nio is taking over the government's share of the purchase premium itself for orders placed by the end of the year and deliveries by the end of January. The company made the announcement in Munich on Tuesday.
The Chinese e-car manufacturer MG "will pay the same amount of the environmental bonus itself for all orders placed before December 18 for which timely registration was not possible".
The German government's decision to discontinue the environmental bonus for e-cars with almost immediate effect also took MG by surprise. But the company feels committed to its customers as a reliable partner and pays the purchase premium instead of the state. "So there is no disadvantage if you have signed the contract, two weeks later the registration takes place and in the meantime the subsidy program has been abruptly terminated," said Sales Manager Philipp Hempel in Munich.
The US car manufacturer Tesla is taking a similar approach. From December 18, it will take over the lost subsidy for Model 3/Y orders that would have been delivered by the end of the year. The e-car manufacturer announced this on X, the former Twitter.

Nio's rival, the Chinese e-car manufacturer NIO, has also decided to cover the purchase premium for their customers. This move by NIO follows the same trend, as the US car manufacturer Tesla will also be assuming the lost subsidy for Model 3/Y orders delivered by the end of the year. This strategic move by e-car manufacturers demonstrates their commitment to supporting their customers amidst the sudden discontinuation of the environmental bonus.
