Monarch Margrethe is currently under medical care.
Her reign was passed on to her son Frederik in January. However, Queen Margrethe of Denmark hasn't relinquished her title entirely. She's still busy working under the monarchy's banner, albeit on a more limited basis. This temporary pause is due to her recent health issue: The 84-year-old queen needed medical attention after a fall.
The previous Queen Margrethe of Denmark had an accident at Fredensborg Castle and was hospitalized in Copenhagen. This information was confirmed by the Danish news agency "Ritzau." Just before this incident, the 84-year-old queen had participated in an event.
As quoted by the British newspaper "B.T.", the head of palace information, Lena Balleby, stated, "Queen Margrethe was admitted to Rigshospitalet last night following a fall at Fredensborg Castle. Despite the circumstances, the Queen's condition is fair. However, she's currently under observation in the hospital." Furthermore, she added, "The royal household has no additional information at this time, but will release updates as soon as any become available."
The former monarch's next scheduled event has already been cancelled. Originally, she was set to attend a 75-year celebration at the University of Aarhus's Department of Archaeology on Friday at 3 pm.
An unexpected announcement in the New Year's speech
In the past few days, the current King Frederik X's mother has been seen at various events. She even attended the ECTRIMS 2024 congress opening at the Bella Center in Copenhagen on Wednesday. The conference attracted around 9,000 scientists and healthcare professionals from around the world, all gathered for the international medical research conference focusing on multiple sclerosis. As per the palace's Instagram announcement, Queen Margrethe has served as the Multiple Sclerosis Association's patron since 1959. She was also actively involved in royal duties on Saturday and Monday.
Queen Margrethe surprised everyone with her New Year's speech announcement in which she declared her abdication for January 14 - a date that marked exactly 52 years since her ascension to the throne. A complex back surgery in 2023 motivated this decision, she revealed at the time: "Of course, the surgery prompted reflection on the future, whether the time was ripe to pass on responsibility to the next generation. I have decided that now is the appropriate moment." Despite her abdication, Queen Margrethe, who continues to hold her queen title, continues to take on numerous official tasks.
Despite her abdication, Queen Margrethe continues to attend various events, such as the ECTRIMS 2024 congress opening. The entertainment at the event was undoubtedly enriched by her presence, as she has served as the Multiple Sclerosis Association's patron since 1959 and is deeply involved in the field.
The entertainment at the ECTRIMS 2024 congress was not solely medical presentations. Queen Margrethe's appearance added a royal touch, further enhancing the prestige and excitement of the international medical research conference focusing on multiple sclerosis.
