"International Situation" Podcast - Mölling anticipates significant defense expenditures for Germany.
Security expert Christian Moelling believes Germany will witness substantial hikes in defense spending. In the "Die Lage – international" podcast by Stern, Moelling stated that the consequences of incoming NATO plans would be staggering. Such consequences include intense debates over defense budgets and the debt limit. He anticipates the United States, a key backer of Ukraine, to withdraw its support - irrespective of whether Joe Biden successfully secures a second term as President. "The Americans will inform the Europeans, 'It's your turn now'", Moelling estimates. The rearmament of both Ukraine and home defense forces call for a multi-year commitment.
Moelling strongly advises against excessive optimism in the Ukrainian war affair. He states, "We're creating an illusion about the possibility of restoring stability in this conflict once more. Ukraine is currently facing difficulties." He considers the utilization of Western weapons against Russian targets to shield Kharkiv a viable option to drive Russian forces back. It's hoped that Kharkiv's relocation into the territory beyond Russian artillery range will occur as a result of this. Nonetheless, there is no ground for assuming that Russia will resist damaging the city. Moelling likens such actions to "Syria style" attacks, with the sole purpose being destruction and terror. A comprehensive view of the front needs to be maintained. Moelling criticizes the focus on Kharkiv as it "panders to the media's attention economy." "We're overlooking the fact that the front line stretches for over 1000 kilometers."
Moelling assures that the distribution of Western weapons for defensive operations on Russian territory won't prompt a "wild artillery attack towards the Russian border". "I suspect we'll observe a great deal of care - not least because Ukraine still needs to reckon with the Western countries," he projects. Moelling expects the US to modify its guidelines for the use of provided weapons by Ukraine; yet, in a relatively understated manner.

Despite Germany's anticipated defense spending increase, Christian Mölling suggests that the United States may reduce its support for Ukraine, regardless of Joe Biden's re-election as President. As a result, Germany and other European nations may need to take a more active role in Ukraine's defense, potentially leading to a significant increase in the country's defense budget.
Germany's security expert Christian Mölling, who anticipates increased defense spending, also mentions that Germany and the international community should be aware of the broader context of the Ukraine conflict. While focusing on protecting cities like Kharkiv is important, Mölling emphasizes the need to maintain a comprehensive view of the entire 1000-kilometer front line.
