In the process of the fatal shootings of a 15-year-old in an Offenburg school class, the Defendant was sentenced by the Regional Court to eight years and nine months of Youth Detention. The Youth Chamber found the 16-year-old defendant guilty of Murder and attempted serious arson, as reported by the court in Offenburg, Germany.
The Chamber considered it proven that the teenager came to the school on November 9, 2023, with a pistol, ammunition, and a self-made incendiary device, and shot his classmate there. The victim was reportedly unarmed and defenseless during the attack, indicating that the offender had acted treacherously.
41 rounds of ammunition
The violent death of the teenager in the special educational Waldbachschool caused regional mourning and shock. The offender, a German national, reportedly had 41 rounds of ammunition with him. The weapon used for the crime was reportedly obtained from the offender's parents' household.
A father, who was at the school during the attack for a parents' meeting, overpowered the attacker and prevented further harm. Sabah Tamer Ayoub was later recognized for his heroic actions.
Motive for the Offenburg crime unclear
As the maximum sentence in this case, the Prosecutor's Office had previously threatened ten years in prison. In Germany, juveniles are criminally responsible from the age of 14. Youth detention is a specifically regulated form of imprisonment for juveniles and young adults.
A motive for the violent act was not clear even after the verdict – rumors circulated of jealousy in the community.
The Youth Chamber proceedings at the court had been ongoing since mid-April, with a total of twelve hearing days reported by a court spokesperson. Visitors and media representatives were excluded from the proceedings during the entire duration due to juvenile protection. The juvenile was reportedly in pre-trial detention prior to the verdict.
The attack took place at the Waldbachschool in Offenburg, where the defendant attended classes. Despite the motive for the crime remaining unclear, the juvenile was found guilty of murdering his classmate and attempting serious arson, leading to his sentencing in a school in Offenburg.
