Mississippi resident files legal claim against a member of the 'Goon Squad' and others for alleged beatings.
Christopher Mack claims in a lawsuit that he was brutally beaten by former Rankin County Deputy Brett McAlpin, Deputy Ricky Davis, and seven unnamed deputies and trustees for 45 minutes while he was in custody at the Rankin County Jail. The county is also named as a defendant in the suit.
Mack was taken to the jail on May 27, 2021, after being arrested in Pearl, the lawsuit states. The complaint alleges that McAlpin and another deputy tried to question Mack about "information he had about drugs and gangs." However, Mack exercised his right to remain silent.
The deputy who attempted to interrogate Mack reportedly hit him "in the back of the head with a set of heavy steel jail keys." McAlpin then joined in the assault, along with deputy Ricky Davis.
After these three deputies beat Mack, the lawsuit alleges that he was taken to Central Pod 6, where six other unidentified deputies and trustees attacked him for 45 minutes. Mack claims to have sustained broken ribs, a broken nose, and threw up blood as a result of the beating. Photographs of his injuries were included in the court filing.
When Mack was released from the hospital, Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey asked him "Who did that to you?" Mack responded "some of your other deputies and trusties." Bailey allegedly replied "F***!" and walked away.
McAlpin is currently serving a 27-year sentence at Federal Correctional Institution McDowell in southern West Virginia for his part in a brutal attack on Michael Jenkins and Eddie Parker. He had previously been a Rankin County Sheriff's deputy and was a member of a group called the "Goon Squad" because of their penchant for using excessive force without reporting it.
McAlpin is appealing his sentence, according to court documents. During his sentencing, prosecutors compared him to a "mafia don," stating, "Without McAlpin, 'the Goon Squad' would not exist. He was the one calling the shots."
None of those named in the civil lawsuit have been charged with beating Mack criminally.
An attorney for Rankin County did not comment on the allegations in the lawsuit.
CNN attempted to contact the attorney for the sheriff's department but had not received a response.
CNN was unable to reach those fully identified in the lawsuit.
CNN also reached out to the offices of Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch and U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi Todd W. Gee, who secured the pleas against the "Goon Squad." Fitch did not respond, while Gee declined to comment.
McAlpin is currently incarcerated for the incident involving Jenkins and Parker. Bailey is alleged to have been aware of the assault but did not act on the information. None of those named in the civil lawsuit have been charged criminally.
