Mercedes introduces the pioneering e-tank model of eActros600, an electric vehicle.

In the present age, electric mobility has become ubiquitous, with vehicles ranging from bicycles to trucks adopting this eco-friendly technology. Mercedes is leading the charge in long-distance transport, planning to electrify the Actros and move away from fossil fuels and local emissions. The powerful e-truck is set to hit the road soon.

The revolution started with a luxurious electric vehicle, a decade and a half ago. Now, electric mobility has taken over the streets, even invading the domain of heavy-duty vehicles. As more car manufacturers shift towards electric power, the trend is followed by the stalwarts in the trucking industry.

Mercedes, known for innovation, is set to introduce the first electric long-distance truck, the eActros600, by the year's end. However, progress, much like in electric cars, comes at a cost. The electric truck is estimated to be around twice as expensive as its diesel counterpart.

Dimensions beyond the ordinary

To transport loads weighing up to 40 tons, truck manufacturers operate in a different league. The two electric motors, connected to the rear axle through a four-speed transmission, generate a combined power of 600 kW/816 PS. This is significantly more than in most high-performance cars.

While car manufacturers boast about battery sizes of 100 kWh, the Actros uses three blocks of 207 kWh each, resulting in around 600 kWh of usable energy, allowing the truck to travel up to 500 kilometers at best.

Two powertrains, roughly equating to 816 metric horsepower, and a four-speed gearbox propel the eActros600 from Mercedes.

Charging - not just a break, but an experience

Impressive as it may be, this isn't enough for a full shift or round-the-clock operation. Therefore, charging is not traditional, but innovative. Currently, the Actros charges at 400 kW, faster than most passenger cars. And as soon as network operators install high-power charging stations, the Actros will be upgraded to megawatt charging, allowing it to charge from 20% to 80% in just 30 minutes. Even during the mandatory break time for truck drivers, enough charge is supplied to last the rest of the shift.

Driving - like a compact car

The technical specifications are astounding or intimidating, depending on the perspective. But once you're comfortable in the air-suspended seat and get used to the steering wheel positioned horizontally, you realize the surprise: Despite its size and weight, the colossal truck drives like a compact car.

With just the little finger and the big toe, the truck can maneuver inclines effortlessly, enter the highway smoothly, and conquer narrow roads without fear. The impressive silence of the electric engine is only broken by the occasional turn and monitor check on the digital exterior mirrors.

Upon covering around 310 miles, the electric vehicle necessitates a recharge at the charging facility.

Braking - the electric twist

Electric vehicles require drivers to adapt to braking, as well. While traditional trucks rely on the lever on the steering wheel, called the retarder, for braking, the electric motors on the Actros provide a significant amount of braking power, saving on wear parts like brake discs. Furthermore, the state of the battery charge increases with braking, depending on the terrain and load.

In conclusion: the superior choice

Not only is the electric Actros clean, but it also offers better driving dynamics and more comfort in the cab - making it the superior long-haul truck. According to Mercedes' market research, at least two-thirds of customers can cover a day's distance with a range of 500 kilometers. However, like other electric vehicles, there's a catch - the price. The eActros costs around twice as much as a diesel, starting at roughly 250,000 euros.

However, despite the high cost, electric trucks offer numerous advantages. They are exempt from truck tolls, and the government supports private charging station expansion. Moreover, the electric Actros has four times the lifespan of a passenger car and can recoup its investment through lower operating costs. Lastly, electric trucks provide a cleaner environment and better working conditions.

Effortless Control: Despite its substantial dimensions, the truck is nearly as manageable to pilot as an ordinary passenger vehicle.

In the world of heavy-duty vehicles, traditional truck manufacturers are beginning to embrace electric power, following the lead of car manufacturers. Other vehicles, including heavy-duty trucks, are now being electrified to reduce local emissions and contribute to a more sustainable future.

The innovative charging system of electric trucks like the eActros allows for rapid recharging, even during mandatory break times for drivers. The high-power charging stations, once installed, will enable the truck to charge from 20% to 80% in just 30 minutes.

Revolutionized workspaces: Traditional rearview mirrors in the eActros 600 have given way to camera systems and displays.
