Honor for Sandra Hüller - Membership of the Oscar Academy beckons

Sandra Hüller (46), the star of the two Oscar-winning film "The Zone of Interest," may soon have the opportunity to decide on future Oscar nominees herself? According to the official website of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Hüller is one of the 487 people offered membership for this year. Each of the potential new members qualified for this honor "thanks to their contributions to film," the statement reads.

"These remarkably talented artists and professionals from around the world have had a significant impact on our filmmaking community." If all of the nearly 500 candidates accept, the membership of the Academy would grow to exactly 10,910 people, reports the American industry website "Deadline." 9,934 of them, including Hüller, would then be eligible to vote for the upcoming Oscar awards in early 2025.

A German director also has reason to celebrate

Not only Hüller, who was nominated in this year's category for "Best Actress" for "Anatomie eines Falls," could represent German voice at the Academy Awards in the future. Regisseur İlker Çatak (40) is also on the list of new membership candidates. Like Hüller, Çatak caused a stir at this year's Oscars with his work "Das Lehrerzimmer," which was nominated for the Oscar as "Best International Film," but had to yield to "The Zone of Interest."

A total of 29 actors and actresses are wooed by the Oscar membership, among them Jessica Alba (43, "Sin City"), Jason Clarke (54, "Zero Dark Thirty"), Lily Gladstone (37, "Killers of the Flower Moon"), and Kate Mara (41, "The Martian"), to name a few. Among the other directors are Fede Álvarez (46, "Don't Breathe"), David Yates (60, "Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix"), and Justine Triet (45, "Anatomie eines Falls").

In general, the invited people usually accept the membership. Sometimes, however, someone decides against it, such as "Black Panther" director Ryan Coogler (38). He revealed to "The Hollywood Reporter" in 2021 that he had rejected an invitation from 2016. As a reason, he mentioned his dislike of the competitive structure of such award ceremonies: "It feels strange to add a competition to an art form like film."

  5. Though most invited people usually accept their membership offers, some may decline, similar to "Black Panther" director Ryan Coogler, who rejected an invitation in 2016 due to his discomfort with the competitive structure of award ceremonies like the Oscars.
