Meg Ryan ruined romantic date
During her time at college, Meg Ryan has a date with a man that the Hollywood star would rather forget. Everything actually goes perfectly. They have a great time on a motorcycle tour, go out for dinner and drive back to the dorm. But then Meg says the wrong thing.
When she was still at college, Meg Ryan went on an adventurous and probably quite romantic date. But with just one little sentence, she ruined everything. In an interview with "Glamour" magazine, the 62-year-old recalls how it all came about. And she talks about how she still has her problems today when it comes to dates.
Even though the actress was long considered the queen of romantic comedies thanks to films such as "Harry and Sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle", Ryan is not particularly adept at dating after her split from singer John Mellencamp in 2019. "It's just as crazy as ever," laughs the 62-year-old. "I don't think anyone ever gets good at it. Maybe some people do. I don't."
This happened to Meg Ryan back in college
When asked about her worst date, Meg Ryan recalls what was obviously a particularly embarrassing experience for her. Everything was actually going great back then until she really messed it up. "I had a date in college where he took me on a motorcycle tour through northern Connecticut and Massachusetts. It was great," says Ryan. But the trip didn't go so smoothly when the two lovebirds headed back to the dorm after dinner. "I had a great time, Phil," she said. The problem: "His name was something like Bob. I never heard from him again." But the date itself was fun.
Maybe she will meet Bob again one day. In her latest film, "What Happens Later", at least that's exactly what happens. The romantic movie with Ryan and David Duchovny is about two ex-lovers who meet again after years and are snowed in together in a small airport.
Meg Ryan enjoyed great success in the 1990s. She starred in popular romantic comedies and was one of the highest-paid Hollywood actresses. She received several awards for her roles back then. In Germany, she was awarded the "Bambi" in the "Actress International" category in 2018 and most recently at the Locarno Festival in 2018. She was married to Hollywood actor Dennis Quaid from 1991 to 2001. Her engagements as an actress are now few and far between. Meg Ryan directed the 2015 film "Ithaca" and the current film "What Happens Later".
Despite her success in romantic movies like "Harry and Sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle", Meg Ryan struggles with her own love life, admitting that dating is still as challenging for her as ever. During one college date, she mistakenly called her partner 'Phil' instead of his actual name 'Bob', which may have played a role in their dissolving relationship. Perhaps Meg's love for movies can also extend to her own love life, as she stars in the romantic film "What Happens Later" about two ex-lovers who meet again under unexpected circumstances.
