Medvedev warns about potential retaliation against Paris and London.

Dmitry Medvedev, the hardwired Russian leader, has once again made threatening remarks towards France and Britain. He referred to these countries as "idiots" and has issued a warning of consequences if their cruise missiles are launched at Russian territory.

Former Russian President and current Vice-Chairman of the National Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, targeting France and the UK, has verbally threatened severe retaliation if Ukrainian attacks are supported by British or French cruise missiles. He expressed these threats on Telegram, also mentioning the Ukrainians' traditional costume, known as "embroidered robes". Medvedev's prior history was seen as relatively moderate and liberal while he was serving as Russian President between 2008 and 2012. However, since the Russian invasion of Ukraine over two years ago, he's been taking these extreme positions and providing pithy threats against Western countries. This could also be perceived as an endeavour to increase his influence within the Russian political landscape.

Russia's state television frequently talks about potential attacks, including nuclear assaults, on major Western capitals like Berlin. These threats may be considered an effort by Russia to prevent further aid from the West to Ukraine.

"With conventional and specialized ammunition"

The ISW (U.S. Institute for the Study of War) recently reported that Russia aims to "convince Western policymakers to tone down their support for Ukraine". As part of Moscow's large-scale invasion of Ukraine, the country has used nuclear intimidation countless times to deter its perceived opponent - the West - from providing additional military aid, as per an analysis.

Medvedev promised that their response to a cruise missile attack would "under certain circumstances" not target Kiev. He went further, stating they would not only target with conventional explosives, but also with "special ammunition." He also spoke directly to the UK using the title "His Royal Highness" in his threat, addressing the missiles to the "not entirely trained idiots."

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron had assured Ukraine of Britain's support on his recent visit to Kiev and underscored that it was up to Kiev to decide how and where they would use the supplied weaponry. Russia has been attacking Ukraine, and Ukraine has the right to defend themselves, according to Cameron. Asked if Ukrainian targets in Russia were within the decision-making realm of Kiev, he responded: "That's a decision for Ukraine, and they have rights".

The Russian Foreign Ministry also objected to Cameron's statements and warned of retaliatory measures. Both France and Britain are aiding Ukraine with cruise missiles. In Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz disapproves of providing Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine.
