Mazda has swapped out the CX-3 with the larger CX-30 in their latest vehicle program. Despite this change, the previous generation CX-3 (years 2015-2022) continues to be a popular used car option, with its high-quality performance being well-acknowledged even by the TÜV.
Performance
Mazda has a stellar reputation for its engine performance, particularly with the Mazda2, which serves as the base for the CX-3. Drivers can approach vehicle inspections with confidence, as the CX-3 typically receives excellent ratings, especially in suspension. However, it falls short in a couple of areas: the brake discs often need replacing at the first inspection, and the front lighting is comparatively criticized more frequently than average.
Size and Interior
At 4.28 meters, the CX-3 is significantly longer than its sedan counterpart, but only provides adequate room in the front. The back seats are tight, and the small door openings make entering and exiting the car awkward. The Mazda is well-suited for city driving and weekend excursions for two passengers, thanks to its nimble handling. However, its relatively stiff suspension diminishes its capability for long-distance travel.

Power Trains and Transmission
At launch, consumers could choose from two naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engines producing 88 kW/120 PS and 110 kW/150 PS, as well as a 1.5-liter diesel engine producing 77 kW/105 PS. All options came with a six-speed automatic transmission. The more powerful gasoline engine was always paired with all-wheel drive, while the diesel engine could be ordered with 4x4.
In 2018, the engines underwent revisions. The diesel engine now produced 85 kW/115 PS from 1.8 liters. By the end of 2020, the previous engine options were discontinued, leaving only a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with cylinder deactivation and front-wheel drive, producing 89 kW/129 PS.
Mazda is one of the car manufacturers whose official fuel consumption figures closely reflect real-world driving: The diesel engine consistently achieves below 5 liters, and the gasoline engines can typically be driven with a 6 before the decimal point.
Features and Safety
The CX-3 was available in four trim levels, with special models like "Homura" also available. In the top version, features like navigation, head-up display, and 18-inch wheels were standard. Optional features were often bundled into packages, so rear parking sensors could only be ordered in conjunction with lane keep assist and heated seats. Used car buyers should always verify the specific equipment details of the desired vehicle.
Those who seek smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto should consider a model released post-2018 facelift. Since 2020, the Connect infotainment system has been included as baseline equipment. The small car earned a four-star rating in the NCAP crash test.
Sharp, agile, and dependable - Mazda's decision to discontinue the CX-30 does not reflect the CX-3's quality as a compact crossover. Early models offered an extensive range of powertrain options, including all-wheel drive. Prices for the peppy Japanese vehicle begin around €14,000.
