May Ukraine soon engage US arms to strike Russian objectives?

The United States may be reassessing how Ukraine can utilize its supplied weapons. So far, Kiev's forces haven't been permitted to use them against Russian soil. However, it seems that the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, is pushing for a new ruling.

Although President Joe Biden has made it a prerequisite for Ukraine not to fire US weapons on Russian land, the escalation at the frontline and Blinken's visit to Kiev have allegedly prompted the White House to reconsider this policy. The New York Times has reported this development.

The Americans might be contemplating allowing the Ukrainians to target Russian positions directly near the border, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi believes are responsible for Russia's recent territorial gains. It's reported that Blinken is the one pushing for this change.

However, this idea is still in its early stages, and it's unclear how many of Biden's closest confidants support it. Moreover, it hasn't been formally presented to Biden himself.

Officials familiar with the conversations mention that Blinken's stance has shifted due to a new Russian front in the war. The Russians have established missile systems just across the border in eastern Ukraine, pointed towards the city of Kharkiv. The Ukrainians, according to them, lack the capacity to respond with drones or weapons they acquired outside the US.

Ukraine has been striking oil facilities and power plants on the border for weeks now, but many of their missiles and drones have been intercepted. Just last night, Russia claimed they had downed 35 missiles and three drones in the Belgorod border area. The Times reveals that enhanced electronic surveillance was used by the Russians.

Earlier, indications of reconsidering were seen by Washington. They're contemplating training Ukrainian soldiers within the country rather than shipping them to Germany for training. This would necessitate the deployment of American military personnel to Ukraine, which Biden has previously prohibited.

The escalation of wars and conflicts in Ukraine, including the recent attack on Ukrainian territories by Russia, has led the USA to reevaluate its policy on allowing Ukraine to use supplied arms for defensive purposes, specifically against Russian objectives near the border. Antony Blinken, the Secretary of State, is reportedly pushing for a change in this policy, which could potentially allow Ukrainian forces to directly target Russian positions.
