The prolific songwriter behind timeless classics like "Suspicious Minds," "Always On My Mind," and "Hooked On A Feeling," Mark James, has sadly passed away at the age of 83 in his Nashville, Tennessee, home. This heartbreaking news was shared by Variety, citing the Houston Chronicle.
James, who penned tunes for big names including B.J. Thomas, Brenda Lee, and Elvis Presley, left an indelible mark on the music industry. Notable among his works are the hit songs "Suspicious Minds" (1969), "Always On My Mind" (1982), and "Hooked On A Feeling" (1974).
In 2014, he was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York City. BMI celebrated him as one of their Songwriters of the Century in 2000, and his three aforementioned songs were included in their list of the 100 greatest songs of the 20th century.
Grammys and B-Sides
Mark James won two Grammys in 1983 for "Always On My Mind," which he co-wrote with Wayne Carson and Johnny Christopher. A year later, country singer Willie Nelson topped the music charts with his rendition of the tune, earning it both Song of the Year and Country Song of the Year accolades.
