Famed US songwriter Mark James (born in 1940) regrettably passed away at his Nashville, Tennessee home on June 8th, reaching the age of 83. This news was reported by "Variety," citing the "Houston Chronicle."

Notable Songs, Hits for Stars

Throughout his career, James penned hits for artists like B.J. Thomas (1942-2021), Brenda Lee (age 79), and Elvis Presley (1935-1977). Some of his most iconic works include "Suspicious Minds" (1969), "Always on My Mind" (1982), and "Hooked on a Feeling" (1974).

In 2014, James received a well-deserved spot in the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York City. Additionally, Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) recognized him as one of their century's greatest songwriters in 2000. Jones' top-three hits were also named on a list of the 100 most significant songs of the 20th century.

He took home two prestigious Grammys in 1983, both for "Always on My Mind." Sharing this achievement with Wayne Carson and Johnny Christopher, James' song received accolades for "Song of the Year" and "Country Song of the Year." Prior to this, Elvis Presley had attempted recording the track in 1972, though it failed to make a massive impact in the U.S., serving as the B-side to Presley's release. However, Willie Nelson's (age 91) cover version in 1987 resonated strongly internationally, reaching the top spot in Germany and Great Britain, as well as number four in the U.S. In 2008, the track was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

"Hooked on a Feeling" had a history of being used in various films, from Quentin Tarantino's (age 61) 1992 film "Reservoir Dogs" to 2014's "Guardians of the Galaxy." However, "Suspicious Minds" is most noteworthy in James' discography, both in terms of his career and that of Presley.

Lastly, Sony/ATV Music Publishing announced an extension to James' contract in 2021, renewing an agreement that had initially been struck 50 years prior when he signed with Screen Gems/EMI.

"Soundtrack of Lovers"

James is mourned by his wife Karen Zambon, daughters Sammie and Dana Zambon, grandchildren, and his extended family. To pay tribute to him, a family statement reads, "Mark's legacy and his zest for life will endure in the hearts of the many who adored him, all thanks to his timeless lyrics and melodies that have functioned as the soundtrack of lovers for decades."
