Marianne and Michael declare the end of their careers
Marianne and Michael announced their departure from the stage around a year ago. Now Marianne Hartl explains the duo's reasons for this decision once again. "We want to live," is their motto for the upcoming time away from the limelight.
Marianne Hartl from the folk music duo Marianne and Michael is looking forward to the time after their departure from the stage in spring. "We no longer want to sacrifice our golden years for our career," says the 70-year-old in an interview with the Bild newspaper. "We want to live! I'm 71, Michael is 75. Many friends and colleagues are dying around us. Many are retiring far too late. That makes us think."
For the couple, there is life after the show, says the singer and entertainer. "For us, this is the start of the best decade. Free from patterns and busy schedules," says Marianne Hartl.
The duo from a Munich suburb will start their farewell tour on February 15 in Schwerin in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The finale after around 50 years on stage together is planned for April 28 in Suhl, Thuringia.
Health setbacks
The pair announced the end of their careers almost a year ago. "It's time for the youngsters to step up. There is so much new blood," said Marianne Hartl at the time, shortly before her 70th birthday. One reason for the decision to retire from the stage may also have been the health setbacks of the previous year: Marianne had broken her shoulder and Michael had suffered a stroke.
"We know that we're on the home straight and that age is taking its toll. We have to take care of ourselves and stop exhausting ourselves," says the singer in an interview with Bild. It was then that she realized how quickly things can happen and how precious time together is. "We are now looking forward to it immensely. And we've earned it too."
"It leaves its mark"
The 70-year-old also points out the downsides of the music business. "It's a very strenuous profession." The duo have been on the road a lot, often staying in hotels. "Plus the many rehearsals and gigs. That leaves its mark." But there will still be music in the Hartl home: "After the tour, we will only sing privately, with the children and grandchildren."
Michael Hartl and Marianne Reiner met in the early 1970s and soon began performing as a musical duo. They have been married since 1979. Their marriage produced two sons. In addition to their singing careers, Marianne and Michael have also presented numerous TV shows, including the "Superhitparade der Volksmusik", the show "Lustige Musikanten" and the preliminary round of the "Grand Prix der Volksmusik".
