Many Swiss don't fancy the ESC

After Nemo's victory in the Eurovision Song Contest this year, the Eurovision Song Contest is set to take place in Switzerland the following year. However, Swiss enthusiasm for the event appears to be contained, according to a survey. Skepticism reportedly prevails among SVP supporters.

According to a survey published by the newspaper "Blick," a narrow majority of Swiss women and men view the hosting of the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 in their country negatively. The survey, which polled nearly 25,000 people, found that 49% of respondents were either clearly or rather skeptical about the music competition.

On the other hand, 46% of respondents were either clearly or rather in favor of Switzerland hosting the contest, while 5% remained undecided. It is already clear, however, that the Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Switzerland next year, following Nemo's victory in May in Malmö.

People with higher levels of education and left-leaning political inclinations were more likely to express support for the contest, according to the survey. SVP supporters rejected the contest hosting with 74%. This could be related to the fact that Nemo, who identified as neither male nor female and does not associate with any pronoun, sparked a debate about the official recognition of a "third gender" in Switzerland.

Nemo, born in Biel, Switzerland, in 1999, came out as non-binary in 2023 and no longer identifies with any pronoun. Nemo now lives in Berlin. At the Eurovision Song Contest in May, Nemo competed with the song "The Code" and emerged as the winner. The autobiographical song deals with Nemo's life story.

The Eurovision Song Contest, known for its blend of Music and Entertainment, will indeed take place in Switzerland the next year, as a result of Nemo's triumphant victory. Despite this, a significant portion of Swiss citizens, particularly SVP supporters, express Skepticism towards the event, as suggested by a recent survey.
