Many people only apply sun cream in summer and when the sun is shining, but effective sun protection is useful all year round.

Many Germans believe in the importance of shielding themselves from the sun.

A study conducted by the health insurance provider AOK discovered that a large number of Germans place importance on shielding themselves from the sun. 81% of those polled expressed this sentiment, as made known by AOK in Berlin on a weekday. Close to two thirds disclosed that they utilize sunscreen during spring and summer.

The percentage of women reaches 72% compared to a lower 58% of men. Nonetheless, the survey clarified that about a quarter of individuals solely use sunscreen in certain circumstances, such as while on holiday or at the outdoor swimming pool. Over 45% admitted to frequently forgetting to apply sunscreen.

UV radiation, as per the AOK, is the primary risk element for the onset of skin cancer. Jens Martin Hoyer, the vice-chairman of the AOK federal association, elaborated on the situation. "Unfortunately, it's also quite evident that people aren't adequately safeguarding themselves," he said.

Approximately half of the participants in the survey declared they were fearful of acquiring skin cancer. In spite of this, merely 28% of those aged 35 and above avail themselves of the option for skin cancer screening. Those who are part of statutory health insurance have access to this service gratis every couple of years.

"Regular examinations are crucial to identify skin cancer in its early stages," explained Hoyer. "With the significant shifts in the climate and thus in UV exposure, I beseech everyone to capitalize on this no-cost opportunity offered by insurance companies." Generally, skin cancer can be effectively treated if caught in its initial stages.
