Crises or urgent situations - Man swept away by Rhine's current; missing
On a Sunday afternoon, several individuals were caught in the dangerous current of the Rhine in Düsseldorf. Tragically, a woman suffered serious injuries and her husband went missing.
The woman had decided to take a dip in the river when she suddenly encountered the strong current. In an attempt to save her, her husband and another relative also jumped in to help. However, all three of them ended up getting caught up in the river's powerful flow.
One of the rescuers was able to escape the current unscathed, but the woman was unfortunately found unresponsive in the water by rescue teams. Emergency medical services and a doctor rushed to the scene to provide life-saving measures before transporting her to a hospital in critical condition. The search for the missing husband, who had gone in to rescue his wife, was called off by rescuers, as their estimation of his chances of survival was poor. The couple's children were comforted by emergency chaplains on the riverbank.
Rescuers also airlifted another man from the water after spotting him in distress. He had luckily survived the ordeal unharmed.
The fire department urges caution when swimming in the Rhine, citing the life-threatening nature of the river. Specifically, they warn of the dangers at places like jetties or stages, where potentially deadly whirlpools and currents can form. Moreover, the ferocious currents present in the shipping lane can pose an additional risk, even for seasoned swimmers. The current can easily sweep them away, making the river a highly dangerous place to swim.
